The Dallas Cowboys selected DE Tyrone Crawford with the 81st overall pick (3rd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Crawford is a big guy at 6’4″, 285 pounds and he runs a 4.77 40. He is a good athlete who is quick off the ball and he’s strong at the point of attack. He’s more of a power player than a speed rusher though. Crawford played in 12 games (11 starts) at Boise State last year and he had 44 tackles, 13.5 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. He has played in 25 games (11 starts) in his two years at Boise State and he had 76 tackles, 27 tackles for a loss, 13.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. This was a solid pick for the Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys dealt the #14 pick (1st round) and the #45 overall pick (2nd round) to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to move up to the #6 spot. With the #6 overall pick, the Cowboys selected CB Morris Claiborne out of LSU. Claiborne played in 14 games (all starts) at LSU last year and he had 51 tackles, broke up 6 passes and 6 interceptions (173 return yards). Claiborne played in 33 games (26 starts) in his three seasons at LSU and he had 95 tackles, broke up 12 passes, had 11 interceptions (274 return yards) and he forced 1 fumble. Claiborne is a lockdown corner and he might get to play a lot of man to man D on an island with starting WRs from Day #1. He doesn’t do well with small receivers in the slot, but that won’t be his job in big D. This was an outstanding move for the Cowboys as Morris Claiborne will team with Brandon Carr to give them an outstanding pair of corners starting in 2012.

Troy Aikman is the best QB in Cowboys’ history. It didn’t start out that was as he was 0-11 as a starting QB in his first year in the league at age 23. He took his lumps and learned from them. Aikman played in 165 games (all starts) in his 12 years with the Cowboys and he completed 2,898 of 4,715 passes for 32,942 yards with 165 TD passes and 141 INTs (81.6 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 327 times for 1,016 yards (3.1 ypc) with 9 TD carries in his career with the Cowboys. Aikman was 94-71 (57%) as the Cowboys’ starting QB during the regular season. Aikman is the Cowboys’ all-time leader in both passing yards (32,942) and TD passes (165). Aikman went to six Pro Bowls (1991-96) for the Cowboys. His best overall year came back in 1993 when he completed 271 of 392 passes (69.1%) for 3,100 yards with 15 TD passes and 6 INTs (99.0 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 32 times for 125 yards (3.9 ypc) in 1993.

Troy Aikman always seemed to step up when the games got bigger as he was 11-4 (73.3%) as the Cowboys’ starting QB in the post-season. Aikman played in 16 games (15 starts) in the post-season with the Cowboys and he completed 320 of 502 passes (63.7%) for 3,849 yards with 23 TD passes and 17 INTs (88.3 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 32 times for 87 yards (2.7 ypc) with 1 TD run in the post-season. Aikman really stepped up in the three Super Bowls he played in as the Cowboys were 3-0 outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 109-47! Aikman completed 56 of 80 passes (70%) for 689 yards with 5 TD passes and 1 INT in his three Super Bowls. He also carried the ball 8 times for 28 yards (3.5 ypc) in those games.

Troy Aikman was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

The Cowboys have been very busy this off-season already in trying to improve their team. Here is a look at what they have done so far in free agency:

Offensively: The Cowboys decided that they wanted new starting guards in 2012, so they went out and signed Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau to take over those roles. The Cowboys also wanted to sign a veteran QB to serve as their backup, so they signed Kyle Orton to a 3-year deal. The Cowboys also claimed QB Rudy Carpenter off waivers from the Bucs and he will likely challenge Stephen McGee for the #3 QB job in training camp. The Cowboys also re-signed WR Kevin Ogletree to help out with depth and they signed FB Lawrence Vickers to help out with blocking in the running game.

Defensively: The most important move the Cowboys have made defensively this off-season was slapping the franchise tag on OLB Anthony Spencer. CB Brandon Carr was signed and he is going to start for the Cowboys from Day #1. LB Dan Connor and safety Brodney Pool will be competing for starting jobs in training camp for the Cowboys.

GRADE FOR THE OFF-SEASON SO FAR: B
