Dallas Cowboys at Denver Broncos preview

The Dallas Cowboys (2-1) are going up against the Denver Broncos (3-0) this week and are looking to go 2-0 on the road.  The Cowboys have been inconsistent so far this year, and no Cowboy has been more inconsistent than Tony Romo.  The defense has been erratic as well, but it did look much better last week against the Panthers than they did in their first two games.  The Broncos are undefeated and their ball-control and running attack style of play has been very successful.

The Cowboys offense has the ability to make some big plays and put a lot of points on the board.  Tony Romo had a huge week-one game but had a terrible game in week two, which consequently made him play timid in week three.  I expect a more aggressive Tony Romo this week, especially with their two best running backs hurt.  Felix Jones is out and Marion Barber is listed as probable.  This looks like it could be a big problem for the Cowboys, but their third-string running back Tashard Choice was no slouch last week and will get a lot of the carries.  Choice had 82 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries (4.6 avg) last week and with him and Barber splitting carries, the Cowboys run game should be okay.

The Cowboys defense really needs to slow down Denver’s running attack.  The combo of Knowshown Moreno and Correll Buckhalter have been a dangerous one so far this season, and they have been able to wear defenses down and eat up the clock.  Quarterback Kyle Orton has done nothing more than what his coach Josh McDaniels has asked of him, which is basically to just manage the game and not turn it over.  If the Cowboys can get a lead and slow down Denver’s running game, the unexceptional Orton will not be able to do much through the air.

I think the Broncos have the perfect style of play for the players they have and it is very effective.  The Cowboys defense will be on the field a lot if they don’t slow down the running game, so that will be an issue of concern for the Cowboys.  Also, who knows which Tony Romo will show up.  If it is the Romo from week one the Cowboys may win it easy, but I think the Broncos will challenge the Cowboys and it will be close.  The Cowboys are more talented though and I think they will win this one.

FINAL SCORE PREDICTION:  Cowboys 28, Broncos 24
